Trainers

William (Bill) Garrison is retiring after 35 years as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida holding a Master of Science Degree from St. Thomas University. He is a Board Certified Counselor, a Certified Trainer in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and a Diplomat in Clinical Hypnotherapy. He has served as adjunct faculty at University of Miami, St. Thomas University, and Barry University.

He served over 32 years in law enforcement as a researcher for the FBI; a Special Agent for the Department of the Army CID Agency, and a North Miami Beach P.D. Detective. Bill retired as a sergeant after serving 25 years with the Miami-Dade P.D. including 23 years as a Hostage Negotiator. He became the first officer assigned full time to the Special Response Team. Bill successfully negotiated the first callout of a Hostage Negotiation as part of a Hostage Rescue Team recorded in the state of Florida in 1974. He later supervised the Psychological Services Section and the Special Response Team Negotiators for 18 years. He was honored in 1988 as one of the State of Florida Top Ten Law Enforcement Officers.

Bill is a Life Member of the Florida Association of Hostage Negotiators after having served 12 years as Ambassador at Large. He worked for FAHN as the primary author of the current Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Hostage Negotiation Course.

Bill has written articles for the U. S. Department of Justice regarding Neuro-linguistic programming and negotiations, post traumatic counseling, communication strategies for negotiating hostage and barricaded crises, inoculation training for handling traumatic incidents and trainer training for officer survival. He developed the post trauma segment of the Stress Management Course for the Florida State Standards Course for Police Officers and has co-authored research papers on stress management and traumatic incidents with police.

Bill has served as a consultant to the National Institute of Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice along with numerous other local, federal, and international government agencies. He has published articles nationally and internationally regarding Neuro-linguistic programming and communication strategies for negotiating hostage, barricaded, and suicide crises, including trauma prevention, recovery, resolution, and resilience.

He was called to provide post-trauma counseling services for the U.S. Treasury Department in New York after 9/11. He was responsible for the psychological trauma recovery and support efforts for over 1000 law enforcement families following Hurricane Andrew and the psychological maintenance of the recovery teams at the crash sight of Valu-Jet flight 592 in the Everglades.

Bill has served as the General Manager of ATS SPECIALISTS a counter terrorist and security specialist team. Although simi-retired, he served as mental health consultant for the Highlands County Sheriff's Office. He is the owner and director of the Crisis Resolution Institute LLC providing solutions through coaching, training development and consultation for law enforcement, emergency services, and private sector corporations under his professional trademark, Mental Martial Arts.

Bill is a life long martial artist training in boxing, wrestling, Shorinji-Ryu Karate, as well as defensive tactics in the military and law enforcement. He holds a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He has studied Taiji meditation, Qigong, and Chinese Internal martial arts of Taijiquan, Bagua, and Xingyi the past 23 years receiving training from several Taijiquan masters including Dr. Yang Jwing Ming; Master Wei Lun Heung; and Master Mantak Chia. Bill was promoted to Coach Instructor in Taijiquan by YMAA  Senior Instructor Lewis Paleias. Bill has been providing Taijiquan training in Sebring, Florida for the past 15 years.

Lewis Paleias has been studying and teaching Chinese Martial Arts for over 40 years. He is a VMAA Certified Instructor (certification Instructor of Taijiquan Instructor and 5th level Chin Na) for Dr. Yang. Ming, Grand-Master, founder of Yang's Martial Arts Association International. Lewis is one of only 12 YMAA Instructors of Taijiquan and of the only 6 HIAA Qigong Instructors world-wide.

 

Lewis has designed and implemented a myriad of programs for improving the balance and health Of seniors. These programs are now being utilized at hospital centers. Federal/State assisted living facilities. the Multiple Sclerosis Society and at Senior Centers in South Florida and New York City. Lewis helped design and co-teach 'Tai Chi and Fall Prevention', an accredited CEU course with Professor Helen Comely, head of FIU's Dept. of Physical Therapy and has been featured in and has written twelve articles for the international magazine "Inside Kung Fu".

 

Lewis is the facilitator of the NYU grant for "Tai Chi and Parkinson's/ Movement Disorders", facilitated at the JCC of Manhattan, taught "Tai Chi for Frailty/ Injury" and  "Tai Chi for Stroke Victims" at Mount Sinai Hospital and heads the Qigong-rai chi  program at the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

 

He is a certified MEB/Asp Expandable Baton trainer, and (on the health side), a Physical Therapist, Sports Nutrition Advisor and a CPR instructor. Working with police, sheriffs, military police and friends in the FBI, he's distilled his many years of experience to create "Open Hand Control, Compliance & Escort"; a system designed to be taught in a simplified module format to quickly train police and security forces in self-defense, combat and control & compliance situations. This offensive use of Tai Chi specializes in using open hand controlling techniques, joint-locking and weapon disarms which minimize liability while maximizing safety.
